Birth
20 Jamadi ul Thani 5 yrs before or after declaration of Prophethood
Titles
Zahra (radiant), Zakiyya (pure, chaste), Radhiyya (satisfied, content), Mardhiyyah (commendable, pleasing), Siddiqa (honest), Tahera (pure, chaste), Batul, Muhaddisa, Umme Abeeha (mother of her father), Ummul Aimma (mother of the 11 Imams)
Death14 Jamadi ul Awwal 11 AH (according to most traditions)

Ibn ˋAbbas narrates from the Prophet (S) that he stated:
“My daughter Fatima is the foremost of all the women of the world, past and future. She is a portion of me, the light of my eyes, the fruit of my heart and a spirit that resides in my body... Be witness that that I have granted her followers amnesty from the fire of hell.” 1
Her Birth
According to Shaykh al-Kulayni, Fatima Zahra was born 5 years after the appointment of the Prophet to his mission (bi’that)2. Shaykh al-Mufid places her birth at 2 years after the bi’that3, and Shaykh al-Tusi4 has mentioned both dates. Accordingly, she lived for 8 or 11 years in Makka before she migrated to Madina, and according to Ya’qubi, two months after the hijra5, and according to Mas‟udi, in the second year of hijra, the Prophet married her to Ali b. Abu Talib.6
Sunni scholars usually mention that she was born 5 years before the bi‟that, in the year that the Quraysh rebuilt the Ka‟ba. Some of them, like Hakim Nishaburi, have also mentioned that she was born a year after the bi‟that, when the Prophet was 41 years old.7
Her Names
As reported by Abu Jaˋfar Qummi, her names include: Fatima, Batul, Hassaan, Hurrah, Sayyidah, ˋAdhra, Zahra, Hawra’, Mubarakah, Tahirah, Zakiyyah, Radhiyah, Mardhiyyah, Muhaddithah, Maryam al-Kubra, Siddiqah-ye Kubra8; and in the heavens she is called Nuriyyah and Haniyyah.9 It should be noted however, that by her names, we generally mean her titles and qualities. She was not necessarily called by all these names; some of them were her titles, while others reveal her qualities, and this is why they are more or fewer found in different traditions.
Her Characteristics
Fatima (A) was a radiant lady who resembled her father, the messenger of God, in her features, gait and manner. The mother of Anas bin Malik narrates that, “Her features were as radiant as the full moon or like the sun that parts the clouds and shines forth.”
It is narrated from the mother of the believers, Umm Salma, that: Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet (S), resembled him most closely in features and manner.10
Jabir bin ˋAbdallah Ansari used to say: Whenever we saw Fatima’s manner of walking, we were reminded of the manner of walking of the Prophet (S).11
It has also been reported from Ayisha: Whenever she came into his presence, the Prophet (S) would kiss her and make her sit in his own place.12
And she also said: I have not seen anyone resemble the Prophet (S) in his speech and conversation more than Fatima.13
Her Virtues
Ibn ˋAbbas narrates from Umm Salma that: “The Messenger of God married me and entrusted me with the upbringing and training of his daughter. But, I swear by God that I found her more courteous than me and more knowledgeable in every affair.”14
It is narrated from Zubayr that: “Whenever Fatima daughter of the Prophet (S) was mentioned in the presence of ˋAyisha, she would say, “I never met anyone more truthful than her except her father."15
It has also been narrated by Fatima that: “When the verse 24/63 was revealed, I was embarrassed to call the Prophet (S), “father”, so I used to address him as, “O Messenger of God”, until he said to me, “O daughter, this verse has not been revealed for you and your family. You and I are as one. This verse was revealed for the faithless and haughty. Call me “father”, for I prefer it and God is more pleased with that.”16
Anas bin Malik narrates: “The Messenger of God (S) asked us, “What is most preferable for women?” We did not know what to reply, so ˋAli went to Fatima and asked her this question.
Fatima (A) said, “Why did you not answer that the it is most preferable for them that they do not see men and men do not see them.” ˋAli returned and related this reply to the Prophet (S). The Prophet (S) asked, “Who has taught you this?” He said, “Fatima.” The Prophet (S) stated, “She is a portion of me.”17
It has also been narrated that: “A blind man came to Fatima (A), daughter of the Messenger of God (S), and Fatima veiled herself from him. The Prophet (S) asked he why she had veiled herself from him, when he cannot see you. She replied, “O Messenger of God, he does not see me, but I can see him and (furthermore) he can smell fragrances.” The Prophet (S) stated, “I bear witness that you are a portion of me.”18
And finally, the Commander of the faithful (A), states about his married life, albeit brief, with Fatima (A): “I swear by God, until the day she departed this world, Fatima (A) never angered me, nor disobeyed me. Whenever I gazed at her, all sorrow and grief would leave my heart.”19
Her Position on the Day of Judgement
“The Prophet (S) stated, “On the day of judgement, a caller from the depths of the throne (ˋarsh) will call out, “O assembly of men, bow your heads and lower your eyes, until Fatima (A) daughter of the Prophet (S) passes across the path (sirat).” Then, accompanied by 70,000 heavenly maidens (huri), she will pass across the sirat as rapidly as lightning.”20
It has also been reported in many narrations that Fatima Zahra (A) will provide intercession for the friends of the progeny of Muhammad (S). Shaykh al-Saduq narrates from Ibn al-ˋAbbas who quoted the Prophet (S) as saying:
“It is as if I see that the day of judgement has come, and I can see my daughter F¡§ima seated on a radiant mount. She is surrounded on all four sides by 70,000 angels, while she leads the believing women of my community (ummah) into paradise. Every woman who would pray five times a day, fast in the month of Ramadhan, go for pilgrimage to the house of God, pay alms out of her wealth, and obey her husband will enter paradise by the intercession of my daughter, Fatima.
In addition to this, it has been reported in many narrations that before she enters heaven, Fatima (A) will claim justice from the killers of Husain (A). Shaykh al-Saduq reports from Amir al-Mu’mineen (A) that:
“The Prophet (S) said, “My daughter Fatima will come with a group of women. Then she will be told, “Enter the heaven.” She will say, “I will not enter until I know what was done to my son after me.” Then it will be said, “Look into the middle of the ranks of people.” When she will look, she will see Husain (A) standing, with no head on his body. She will give out a cry, which will be echoed by us, and all the angels. Then God’s wrath will be aroused and he will command a fire by the name of Hayhab, (which has been kindled for 100 years till it has turned black, and in which no joy is found and no sorrow is alleviated) to engulf the killers of Husain.21

Article contribution by Sheikh Abbas Jaffer

It is written in the book title: “Chehreh DiraKhshan Husain bn Ali (peace be upon him)”: A reputable scholar, promoter of the office of the pure and infallible holy household of the Prophet (peace be upon them), Hujjatul Islam wal Muslimeen Hajj Sayyid Murtada Mujtahidi Sistani transmitted as follow:

My honorable uncle, a trust reporter of Hadith, late Hajj Sayyid Ibrahim Mujtahidi Sistani (May Allah promote his rank) is one of the old praise reciter of the holy household of the Prophet; he is also a preacher and a watchman in Quds Radawi Shrine of Hadrat Ali bn Musa Rida (peace be upon him). This great late uncle had an important dream that the entire praise reciters and servicemen of the master of the martyrs (peace be upon him) need to take lesson from it. In the dream he was at the presence of Hadrat Sidiqah Fatimah Zahra (peace be upon her) while a register is opened. He inquired from Hadrat Zahra: what register is this?

Hadrat Zahra (peace be upon her) in answering the question said: the names of the praise reciters of my son Imam Husain (peace be upon him) are registered in the notebook.

He glanced at the notebook and saw a lot of praise reciters’ name registered in it and the exact remuneration for each an every one of them in the gathering of the holy two months of Muharam and Safar is also mentioned therein.
This late uncle also saw his name in this register and thirty Tuman is also registered behind his name!
He woke up from sleep while he is astonished of this dream, even though thirty Tuman then time is a reasonable amount for a gathering but as remuneration for two months gatherings, it is hard to be believed.
Fortunately that year it is just few days to the holy month of Muharam and he was seriously sick that he doesn’t have the ability to go out of the house; his sickness prevail till the end of the month of Muharam and Safar. In these two months he was not able to attend except a day when he was relief and after the gathering one envelop is given to him that consist thirty Tuman.

After then his dream became clear that how much Hadrat Zahra (peace be upon her) is dear to the gathering and the praise reciters! And how all the infallibles control the program of Hadrat Husain (peace be upon him).
In order to show clearly the importance of sincere praise reciting and the special concentration of Hadrat Zahra (peace be upon her) be attentive to the following narration:

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) says in a narration: no one shall weep for Imam Husain (peace be upon him) until his weep reach Hadrat Fatimah (peace be upon her) and she will assist him because of his weeping for Imam Husain (peace be upon him), she shall also take it to the holy Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) that he has fulfill our right in this respect Bihar al-Anwar volume: 25 page: 206

In another narration of Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) concerning the importance of weeping for Imam Husain (peace be upon him) he said: …… verily Imam Husain (peace be upon him) sees who weep for him, he shall seek forgiveness for them and demand his fathers to seek forgiveness for him and shall say: O’ those who weep! If you know what Almighty Allah has prepared for you, you will be happier than your sorrow, surely He will forgive all your sins and mistakes Bihar al-Anwar volume: 27 page: 300

A drop of tear for the sorrow of the master of the martyrs cleans one hundred black letters; it is derived from the narration that Imam Husain (peace be upon him) is present in the gathering and whoever present in such gathering is in the presence of the master of the martyrs, meanwhile he should completely respect and observe the rites of the gathering.
Another important point is that those who weep for Imam Husain (peace be upon him) after the gathering must supplicate for the reappearance of the avenger of his blood likewise to seek from Almighty Allah to hasten the reappearance of the remaining proof of Allah (May our soul be sacrifice for him) in order to be part of the favor of the leader of the time (peace be upon him).
In one truthful dream the leader of the time (May our soul be sacrifice for him) said: Verily I pray for whoever supplicate for me after mentioning the calamity of the master of the martyrs in the mourning gathering. Mikyalil Makarim volume: 1 page: 334

When writing about the greatness of a personality, one needs a gold standard with which to compare the strengths and weaknesses of that individual. However, if that person is herself the gold standard, then it makes it impossible to adequately describe her greatness. Hazrat Fatima az-Zahra (A) was such a personality.  Her merits are unmatched by any woman known in history and Allah (swt) Himself testifies in the Qur’an about her purity and piety.
It is related that Imam Jafar As-Sadiq (A) said: “Fatima has nine names near (to) Allah swt, they are: Fatima,As-Siddiqa (the honest), Al-Mubarakah (the blessed one), At-Tahirah (virtuous), Az-Zakiyah (the chaste),Ar-Radhiyatul-Mardhiah (who is gratified and shall be satisfied), Al-Muhaddathah (the one to whom angels speak), and Az-Zahra (the splendid.)
I will quote a few passages from the introduction of the Book titled “Fatima the gracious” by Abu Muhammad Ordoni, the Jordanian scholar:
“Fatima is a female created by Allah (swt) to be a sign of His marvelous and unprecedented Might. For, the Almighty Lord created Muhammad (S) as a sign of His among the Prophets; and created from him a daughter, Fatima Zahra, to be a Sign of His ability to create a female possessing all moral excellence and talents. In fact, Allah the Almighty bestowed Fatima with a vast share of greatness and high level of majesty, which no other woman can ever claim to have reached.

She is one of the prominent people  close to Allah swt,   whose greatness was acknowledged by the Heaven before the creation of mankind; and in whose regard verses from the Qur’an that are (being read) and will be read day and night until the day of resurrection, were revealed.”

Fatima’s (A) genius is considered an example of a Muslim woman’s adherence to noble traits. She is a perfect example of how a daughter, a wife, and a mother should act while keeping her decency and pure character. She also shows us the Muslim women’s role in social fields within the limits of religion and virtue. Her life confirms that Islam does not deprive women of acquiring scientific, cultural and literary knowledge;”

The merits of Hazrat Fatima (A) are many. Numerous verses in the Qur’an are revealed in her praise. Some of the well known verses in the Qur’an in praise of the Ahlul Bayt, including Fatima (A) are these:
  1. Verse of Mubahila. Chapter 3: v.61
  2. Verse of Purity. Chapter 33: v.33
  3. Verse of Muwaddat. Chapter 42: v. 23
  4. Verses of Surah Ad-Dahr. Chapter 76

Traditions referring to the merits of Hazrat Fatima (A)
In Tareekh Baghdadi it is related to Prophet (S) that he said: “The best of your men is Ali Ibn Abu Talib, and the best of your women is Fatima Binte Muhammad.”
Prophet (S) also reported to have said: “Fatima is part of me, that which annoys her annoys me, and that which harms her harms me.” (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and Sahih Tirmidhi...)
Fatima (A), the daughter:
She loved and cared for her father and attended to him when he was ill or injured in one of the battles to defend Islam. After the death of her mother, Hazrat Khadija, she attended to the Prophet (S) even more often and consoled him during times of hardship, so much so that he called her "Ummi Abiha” which means "mother of her father."
The Prophet (S) used to stand up to receive her when she visited him. It was clearly against the Arab custom for a father to stand up for his daughter. This shows the high spiritual status accorded to Fatima by Allah swt.
It is related that Anas bin Malik’s mother said: “Fatima was like a moon on its full night, or the sun covered by no clouds. She was white (fair) with a touch of rose color on her face, her hair was black and she had the beautiful features of the Messenger of Allah (S).” (Mustadrak Al-Hakim)
Qandozi reported that Hazrat Aisha said: “Whenever the Prophet (S) returned from a trip, he would kiss Fatima’s throat and say: ‘From her, I do smell the fragrance of Paradise.’”

Fatima (A), the wife.
Her home environment was an example of harmony, peace, tranquility, and modesty. She helped her husband in his worldly and religious affairs, and cooperated with him in achieving his exalted mission.
It is written in Al-Bihar, on the authority of Manaqeb that Imam Ali (A) said: “By Allah, I never angered Fatima, or forced her to do something (she did not like, up to the day she died. nor  did she ever anger or disobey me. In fact, when I looked at her, depression and sadness would be removed (from my heart.)
Al-Ayyashi in his Tafseer of the Qur’an reported that Imam Al-Baqir (A) said: Fatima vouched to take care of the household work, make dough, bake bread and clean the house; Ali in return vouched to take care of the outside work (such as) gathering firewood and bringing food stuff.”

Fatima (A), the mother:
It is sufficient to say that Fatima (A) raised two boys, Hasan and Husain, the leaders of the youth of paradise who were the Purified and Infallible Imams. She raised two daughters; Zainab and Umme Kulthum.  The older one was Zainab (A) who carried on Imam Husain’s mission to the court of Yezid bin Mu’awiya and ensured its success.

Fatima (A), the teacher:
Being brought up by the Prophet (S) of Allah (the City of knowledge) and in company of her husband(the gate to the city of knowledge) it is easy to understand why she was highly enlightened in the knowledge of the Qur’an and the Islamic Law.
It is reported in Al-Bihar that a lady came to Hazrat Fatima with questions, and then repeatedly came with more questions. Then she felt embarrassed and said she did not want to inconvenience Fatima. At this Hazrat Fatima answered:
“Ask me regarding any thing which comes to your mind ….”    “My reward for (answering) every inquiry is more than that which fills (the space) between the ground and the Throne (heaven) with pearls; thus, I should be more apt to answer your questions.”
Quotes from Fatima (A).
1.      It is attributed to Imam Sadiq (A) that he heard from his forefathers that Hazrat Fatima (A) had said that: “The man who is observing a Fast would not gain any thing when his tongue, ears, and limbs are not safe from sin.”
2.      “Allah fixed the reward for His obedience and torment for His disobedience so that He may restrain His servants from His Wrath and Fury and lead them to paradise.”
3.      “You the servants of Allah are the ones to maintain His injunctions and prohibitions, and carry His religion and His revelations, and are the trustees of Allah upon your souls, and propagators of His religion among other nations.”
4.      “The Book of Allah is the guide to its followers toward the pleasure of Allah. Listening to it (carefully) leads to the Salvation. The enlightened and conspicuous evidences and proofs of Allah can be obtained through it. … .”
5.      “Allah rendered alms for the purity of your souls and for flourishing and expansion of your sustenance.”
6.      “And (Allah made) kindness to the parents as a protection (shield) to His wrath and displeasure.”
7.      “And Allah made the vow performing (fulfilling of vows) as a medium for forgiveness.”

The quotes 2-7 are from “Fascinating discourses of the 14 Infallibles” by the Islamic Propagation Organization, translated by Javed Iqbal Qazilbash; Ansariyan Publications.

In Conclusion:
Fatima (A) held a pivotal place in the family of the Prophet (S). She had the distinction of:  being the daughter of the most beloved Prophet (S) of Allah swt; the wife of the First Imam who was the purified one, and the only one to bear the title ofAmir-ul-Mu'mineen; the mother of two Imams who are the leaders of the youth of paradise. She is the one from whose progeny 11 Infallible Imams came. She herself was purified and infallible, granted divine knowledge, bestowed with wisdom, reasoning, intellect and Grace. The Tasbih formula that was a gift to her by Allah swt through His Prophet (S), the recitation of which is a source of forgiveness, mercy and reward for her followers. Allah has promised her the privilege of Intercession on the Day of Judgment, on behalf of those who love her, send salutations on her, and adhere to the teachings of the fourteen Infallibles. No woman comes close to her exalted status.

May we be among those who earn the intercession of Hazrat Fatima az-Zahra. A.S. Aameen.
